Have you ever wondered who died when the echo of a bell toll reached your ear?

Who died when the masked man descended from their black church to burn the flesh of the forgotten? Some say there aren’t enough of them to give names to the bodies, find the culprit. Even worse when you slip through their fingers, the only thing you can do is return as the worst memory you ever had, hoping your loved ones aren’t a part of it.

HAUNTED ECHOES is a lightweight TTRPG focused on one-shots and short term games where we play as weird detectives in the rainy streets of a fantasy victorian city. Use your talents to gather clues, solve cases, banish ghosts, deal with elemental demons and ruthless scoundrels while trying to search for an answer to the question that haunts your very being. Inside you will find rules for:

  • Solving cases, including gathering clues and delivering the truth
  • Dealing with the countdown clock, a ticking catastrophe waiting to happen
  • Taking the risk, when your talents as a detective aren't enough you accept the risk and roll the dice
  • Using special abilities tailored to help you solve weird cases scattered around the city
  • Running investigations without a GM, relying solely on the fiction of the cases to create interesting clues
  • A simple and fast downtime, check your notes or wear the mask to get ready for another case
  • The principles of play, including guidelines on how to deliver consequences when a dice roll goes awry
  • Rolling on tables to create both characters or possible cases to investigate

Haunted Echoes is currently on v0.4 and is fully playable. For future updates you can expect small fixes to the rules, more tables to help you run the game and a revised layout, including more guidance on how to use your talents and create clues.

Absolutely love the vibes of this ttrpg. I made a detective and tried some solo journalling and really enjoyed it. How much more worldbuilding is going to accompany this? more tables to roll on would be great! I found myself pulling from a tarot deck to get ideas for what kind of evidence my detective would find when searching a place. I hope to see more from it just because I had a blast. The setting is just so up my alley and I'm considering doing some illustrations for my experience as I had a good time.

Nice! The game was born from my desire to play as detectives in the world of Blades in the Dark, if you are curious about the lore I would check that game out.

Currently I have plans to use these rules to develop another game in a original world, but I'm not sure when that will happen.

I quite like the look of this, but don't entirely understand what "strike" means here as part of the rules. What happens when you strike an Approach?

(1 edit)

When you strike anything, be it a talent or approach you have, you can't use them for the rest of the investigation. For example, if you strike the "Become the labyrinth" talent, instead of just marking stress and gaining a clue when you hit the streets, you are forced to make a risk roll. During Downtime you can use your xp to clear those strikes before moving to another case.

Maybe slash would be a better word for it since are you supposed to make a marking in the sheet? I don't know. I will make it more clear in another version but I hope that helps for now!
